CAMERON LEE ROBERTS| FIGURATIVELY SPEAKING

Artists' past, present and future understand the importance of being creative. Look 'create' up in the dictionary and you will find it means

... to bring into being; to form out of nothing; to cause to exist.

Observe a child with crayons or a pencil and a blank piece of paper and you will see this word in action. But, have you ever wondered what being a creative person actually does for the person being creative? What we get from being creative, might just be more important than anything we create.

Give some thought to the following statement:

"Creativity is the only path upon which you will ... find yourself, lose yourself and become yourself"

I have never considered, with any conviction, working in one medium alone. A conclusion formed during my art college days when I believed that it would be advantageous to explore many materials and mediums so that later, in my experience, I could use a medium that might best fit a given creative idea. It is natural to me to have a multitude of mediums and a number of dimensions in which to create. The only constant I can claim to hold before you is my passion for the figure. The one genre I have clung to through all I have done. The figure represents a connection to myself ... a relating to my humanity ... a grasp of that intangible part of our realness.

A simple mark ... the portrayal of what you see as interpreted by your heart. Mark making is a personal identifier. Emotional, sensitive, sensual .... at times energy charged mark making is a distinguishing character of my figurative sketches. Sensitive, bold, graceful or fluid, marks are an expression of who you are, how you see and what you feel. A mark, immediate and unblemished by rational thought is a raw and powerful expression of 'self.'

There is a passion that overtakes me when I paint or sculpt, but no more than at any other time than when I am drawing and more so yet when I am sketching. There is an immediacy to the sketch that is pure creativity at work. A sensitivity ... tenuous and lifting, a departure from all that you are ... a forgiveness!
