JOANNE MACDONALD & BRIAN COX | DUALITY AND INTROSPECTION

Joanne MacDonald and Brian Cox create two and three dimensional artworks that express internal dialog. The choices we make, and what we say to ourselves about those choices, define who we are. Joanne and Brian's artworks explore these issues subtly and beautifully through abstraction and the use of unusual materials.

Joanne MacDonald

Inspired by nature, and working primarily in metal, Joanne cuts, weaves and welds rustic panels imbuing them with an aura of warmth and meditative tranquility. Her sculptural work in metal includes both still life assemblages as well as strikingly primitive and abstract three dimensional forms. Joanne's figurative clay works are pensive and introspective, inducing an emotional dialog between the artist and the viewer. "Through my art I explore issues of self awareness and self doubt. These pursuits provide both a cathartic release and a kind of reflective diary for my artistic and personal growth".

Brian Cox

Thematically, Brian's artwork tends to deal with duality and questioning how we define ourselves as belonging to, and, by definition, in opposition of specific defined beliefs and behaviors. He works with a wide variety of materials and techniques including aluminized cement, welded steel, fused glass, handmade papers, real metal coatings, chemical patinas, solvent dyes, acrylic paints, gels, tars and sealers. By combining mediums and techniques, he imbues his artwork with a dynamic character; enriching it with diverse textures and colors. "The direction of our lives is defined by the choices we make every single day. As we grow, many of these choices are made without contemplation. My art attempts to play devil's advocate ... to tell the viewer that every interaction, every behavior, every decision we make is a choice ... and you have the power to choose both the expected and the unexpected."
