KATHY GUTHRIE & THERESA EDWARDS | ALONG THE WAY: A JOURNEY OF TWO ARTISTS

KATHY GUTHRIE | ARTIST STATEMENT

Artistic expression has always been part of my life. Over the years I began collecting quotations and words that relate to my past and present life experiences and put them into my art as reminders. It has become clear to me that no two days are willing to express themselves in the same language or light. Each new work with its textures and layers of hidden emotion is approached as an adventure and challenges me to enter new and exciting forms of expression. I love what I do and have been sharing my knowledge with students through classes and workshops where I can encourage personal experience and artistic expression to come together in art.

KATHY GUTHRIE | BIOGRAPHY

Kathy was born in Northern Ontario, Canada and in the late 1970's moved West in search of the last of the wild frontier. Her formal education in graphic design and the lettering arts has led to creating mixed media pieces using layers of words and colour begging the viewer to take a closer look. She continues to develop her work by attending workshops and through personal experimentation. Connecting with other artists in the community through exhibits and instructing art classes and workshops is also an important part of her artistic journey. She and her husband have very recently become "empty nesters" and now reside in Victoria BC.

THERESA EDWARDS | ARTIST STATEMENT

Run, walk, fly, drive... we all are on a journey.
Painting is my journey. Colour is my fuel, the brushes are my wheels.

It is hard to imagine a world without colour, and even more difficult for an artist whose inspiration
is fueled by the colours which surround her each day. Whether they are rich and vibrant, or soft and
tranquil-the presence of colour is quite powerful. It has the ability to alter mood, influence perspective
and create illusion.

My paintings are composed of multiple layers of paint. I use thick, uneven brushstrokes to create
a unpredictable mix of colour on the canvas. I work quickly, periodically breaking to absorb the
progress of the painting and determine it's destination. I then spend plenty of time on finishing details,
and often incorporate simple lines to portray the final image.

When the destination becomes clear, the painting is complete,
and then it's the viewer's turn.

THERESA EDWARDS | BIOGRAPHY

Theresa was born in Saskatchewan in 1976 and spent her childhood in the prairies. This is where she first discovered her love for painting. Over the years she enjoyed experimenting with paint, and challenged herself with new mediums and techniques. At sixteen, she moved to British Columbia and her attitude towards art began to change. She was no longer interested in trying to re-create a photograph. Instead, by her early twenties, she was using painting as a form of expression. Since then, she has expanded into mixed media, and her current works usually combine acrylics with oil stick, pastel, or ink. Theresa is trained in Graphic Communications, and continues to develop her artistic skills through ongoing visual art and design courses. She resides in Kelowna, BC, and shows her work throughout BC and Alberta.
